Wooden Playhouses

One of the most idyllic outdoor toys for the summer is the wooden playhouse. Wooden playhouses are a brilliant range of wooden toys for the garden that stem from the popularity of the Wendy house we all loved and knew as a kid. Wendy houses as we know are indoor structures which lead kids into a world of imagination in the safety of their own home.

With a wooden playhouse, children can escape the normal surroundings of their home in all weathers and go play in the garden but in a sheltered environment. With a playhouse, they still get sunlight and air with the windows included in the design. It can be quite surprising how warm the inside of a playhouse can get in the summer so always best to keep the windows open when children are playing.

Toys can be kept in a wooden playhouse ready for when children go outside but also as storage if parents do run out of space in the home. The designs for a playhouse can range from anything from a country cottage to a cowboy outpost. Wooden playhouses are an outdoor toy most certainly worth looking at for the summer, but also all year round.

Wood working has always been a popular hobby but does not seem to be the top of the list these days. With computers being an increasingly popular area, many people forget there is great job in producing wooden items such as wooden playhouses or climbing frames.

When making wooden products, the feeling of joy in producing the work of a craftsman is very uplifting so if you want to give it a go, you will need your own tools. High quality tools are recommended even though they will be more expensive as they will be much more reliable. When you are producing a wooden playhouse for example for children, you don’t want to produce something substandard for their garden.

As well as producing items for children like wooden playhouses, you could also produce furniture or a specially designed piece of furniture which will stand out in someone’s home. For a wooden playhouse you will need many things to be covered to make sure its safe to play in. It needs to be endearing but also last for years, as the weather outdoors can be very harsh on wood if not treated properly.

As well as woodwork as a hobby, some people may take it further and use it as a avenue to earn extra money, especially if they are retired. Being paid for something you love is always a good thing.

Big-hearted Queenstown sisters Sarah (left), 14, and Jamie, 12, Wood are selling off their beautiful childhood playhouse which they have treasured since childhood to raise money for charity.

The girls have had it since it was built for both of them over 10 years ago by their granddad Bill McCallum, who is now unfortunatly suffering from prostate cancer.

But now they would like their idilic wooden playhouse to find another loving home. They have asked for the money they raise to  be split between the Prostate Cancer Foundation and children’s charity CanTeen.

The playhouse will go to whoever offers the highest amount above $800 by 5pm on December 19. Also included is a free 90-minute hire of a Hiab truck for delivery within the Wakatipu.

“We hope someone else gets as much enjoyment out of it as our kids have had,” says the girls’ dad Mike. “It’s very well-made and holds a lot of happy memories for our family.”
